Day 1: Explain a concept you know well to a 12-year-old.
Salah can help reduce your depression.
I see this is a hikmah that is beneficial to people with depression. As I said before, depression makes you stay in one place, not moving, not doing anything. But if you're a Muslim and you believe in Allah. You are actually encouraged to move, to get up. to stand, to do the prayer.
Did you know that multiple study find that washing yourself with cold water can also reduce depression symptoms? When in contact with cold water, it causes a "shock" that increases alertness, boosting mood, and "feel good" hormones.
Do you know what depression is?
It's a mental disorder characterized by constant sadness, loss interest in activities, and low energy.
For me, it looks like staying in bed all day, having no energy or no interest to get up and do activities.
Your mind will also full of thoughts that make you feel empty, useless. You feel helpless.
I read research that found that depression hates a moving target. It means, if you actually get up, move, do something and get out of your 'depression spot', you can actually reduce your depression amount.
It makes sense for me, since at times when I feel down, I used to dance and it tremendously helped with my mental state.
Recently, I've been going to gym regularly and my mood has gotten really stable too.
Then what does it have to do with salah?
As you know, salah is a prayer that is done 5 times a day.
It's a series of physical movement and recitation. The movement consists of standing, bowing, rising from bowing, prostrating and sitting.

Salah is a ritual that must be done no matter what happened. 5 times a day. Even if you're sick, but if you're capable of doing the ritual of salah, you must do it.

And before starting Salah, you must perform ablution (Wudu). This is a ritual purification where Muslims wash themselves with water.
Did you know that multiple study find that washing yourself with cold water can also reduce depression symptoms? When in contact with cold water, it causes a "shock" that increases alertness, boosting mood, and "feel good" hormones.
So when you're a muslim, you can't say no to salah even if you're depressed. And when you're actually trying to pray by performing wudhu first, you get 'forced' to leave your depression spot, you get 'forced' to have contact with water, and you also perform a series of physical movements that moves your body.
And it's all done 5 times a week, which means you are 'forced' to all this for repreated times in a day. And you know what's also mindblowing? Salah times are spread from dawn until night. There is also a midnight prayer called tahajjud, which is not obligatory but recommended. Altogether, the timings of salah are distributed across the 24 hours of a day.

This is a great evidance that salah makes you move in your 24 hours of a day. Salah doesn't let you sink in your bed, get lost in your thoughts and be helpless. It reminds you that you have the energy to move, and to pray to God. It lets you help the transition from being powerless to empowered.
